Innovative Approaches to Supporting Homeownership in Native Communities

The Montana Native Homeownership Coalition continues to address the unique challenges of promoting homeownership in Native communities through innovative solutions and strategic partnerships. This month, we’re spotlighting some key initiatives that directly impact lenders and their role in advancing homeownership opportunities.

Myth-Busting Lending on Tribal Land

A highlight in the lending space is the impactful work being done by the Native American Community Development Corporation (NACDC). Through creative and flexible approaches, NACDC is breaking down long-held myths that lending on tribal land is too complex or risky. By tailoring loan products and working closely with tribal communities, they have proven it is not only possible but also essential to expand homeownership opportunities. Their work sets an example for lenders across Montana, showing that collaboration and flexibility can overcome barriers.

Innovative Financing Solutions

The Coalition’s Mortgage Lending Committee has been working on innovative solutions in the lending space by engaging and incorporating, existing and new pilot programs across organizations into the lending toolbox. One example is USDA’s appraisal pilot program, designed to streamline the appraisal process on tribal lands. This example is only one step in the overall process but an innovative solution to a common barrier and bottleneck in the overall lending process on tribal lands.
